What is Kristang Eurasian?
A.K.A. Kristang-Eurasians, Serani or Eurasians
Originating between the 16th and 17th centuries, it is a creole ethnic group of people of mixed Portuguese and Malaccan descent based in Malaysia (and Singapore lah!). This creole group typically has strong Portuguese or Dutch roots, along with British, Indian, Jewish, Chinese, and Malay as part of the intermarriages that took place through the generations. They speak Kristang also known as Malacca-Portuguese and are majority Catholic which alludes to how they got the name “Gente Kristang” meaning Christian people.
